Too Easy

About one Year,im back in Germany and after 13 years of living in Brazil,i have become very lazy(Okay, not to much)I have learnt, how to make the best, without putting to much Effort.
When i went to the Supermarket and i saw the Quality and the Prices of Vegetables,i decited, to grow them myself again. There is nothing better.
There was only one Problem. We have a lot of Land, enough,to plant more,as we can eat.But it is all Grassland and to turn it into Vegetablegarden, its a real Trip.
So,last Fall,i started,to dig the Ground and pick out,Millions of terrible Roots,of Plants, that grow faster, then everything else.Leaving just a little piece of those Roots, they will come back, quicker as you can look.
This Year, when i was fed up with diggin, i had a Idea, how to prepare the Garden, without breaking my Back.
We have 3 Horses and they make a lot of Sh..! So,i took all this beautyfull Material and spread it out, allover the Piece of Land, that i decited,to be the future Vegetablegarden.
I put it about 30 to 40 cm thick over the Grassland,to kill the wheat and at the same time fertilize it.
In the Spring,i planted the Land, that i had prepared last Year and all Plants grew very good.
But im not satisfied,i wanted more.
So,i made the Experiment and planted Botatos,Tomatos,Beans and a lot of different things, directly into the (Sorry) fresh Horseshit, that i have spread out before.
You cannot imagine the result.
From some of the Botatoplants,i get more then 5 kg each Plant and everything else,i could watch it growing.
Some of the last Botatos,i planted,i just threw on top of the Horseshit, little botatos, where i did not think, that they will grow at all.I covered them, with the same Material and i was amazed of the outcome.Just a simple Botato, was so big, that just one of them was enough,to fill my Stomach. And such a taste.
Okay, there are many Plants, who dont like,if the Dung is to young, but i know, how i will prepare the Garden next year.

  1. How fantastic is that sh..... yes I have to agree it is a wonderful fertiliser and what a great way to recycle it. I used a mixture of the hay and manure that came out of my daughter in-laws horse float one year on the roses and I have never seen them look better. All that nitrogen is what the plants love. I think I had better get back up to the farm for more of that goodness. Lucky you it always around. Thanks for posting about the benefits of good old fashioned horse manure.

  2. Hey hi and welcome Guru Attena!
Loved this post of yours - yes supermarket and retail fruit and vegetables are not really that good and no comparison as you say. Great you make the effort and yes your efforts will teach you more over time. I tought maybe you could build the beds up above the ground level to save a lot of work.- Keep coming back with your garden adventures - was a fun read and nice to meet you.

  8. LOL! Great post.

I do have to caution you that horse poop tends to be high in salts and so you should do a soil test every few years. Back home in the Napa Valley a local veterinarian gave away free stall muckings of horse poop mixed in hay and it was good sh**! I had the biggest and most awesome compost pile followed by the most awesome produce. I was, however, aware of the potential problems with using too much horse poop but I must say that suffered any problems.

  9. Hi Amy
Thank you for your comment and suggestion.
And you are right,we have to be carefull with the health of new horsedung. Anyhow, its good to make a soiltest, once in a while, but this is good to do,even without horseshit. When i lived in brazil,i never just any horsedung neither fresh, nor old.
You cannot imagine, how much, terrible parasites, you will get together, with that normally beautyfull stuff. And sometimes painfull parasites, even without eating the outcome of this fertilizer, speak: vegetables etc. And they can be very painfull and boring for humans. I know that from my own experience. There i used only really old and rotten cowdung. for many kind of plants. But the climate in brazil is not really made for horses.
If something is unusual or wrong in any way, climate, food, space,or whatsever, for plants, for animals,or even for humans, then there is a good possibility,to get weak,or sick. If somebody, who lives in very cold countrys, moves over to tropical climate, there is a good chance,to get sick in the beginning, because of all kind of changes and if we are sick, our body gets weak and easily will be attacked,by other kind of diseases,or parasits. If we are healthy, then it will be difficult, for parasites and diseases,to enter our body. And this is the same with animals and plants too.
What i wanted to say,is,that when the horses are healthy and strong, then even the (sorry when i use this beautyfull word) shit should be okay. I would not use it from horses, that becomes powered with all kind of chemical,in this case bullshit.
I normally follow my feelings or instincts, watching,if there is something going wrong, watching the plants, treated by the fertilizer, watching the green,or the roots. If my vegetables grow like crazy, looking healthy and i know, this does not happen, because of chemical threatment, then i will eat my whatsever, with a lot of prazer.
Have a nice day and big botatos. ;)

  10. OOOPS! I had a typo! I meant to say that I *didn't* suffer any problems!

Sorry about that. I used a lot of horse poop and I looked for potential problems cuz I knew it was high in salts, but there weren't any problems. Not only weren't there any problems, but my garden was really awesome with big and beautiful and tasty veggies.

    Sorry again for my typo.
